Keep them short
I keep my videos shorter than ten minutes, most less than five. Follow general presentation guidelines
Don't just read your slides and use visuals when possible!
Use varied techniques
Similar to the different styles used during a traditional classroom lesson, when creating video mixing together more than one style is critical. That way the viewer experiences your message in different modalities. Combine first person narrative with more traditional screencasting. Demonstrate when possible.
Take your audience along
Video offers the perfect opportunity to share your experiences outsifde of the classroom setting with your students. With a little bit of prior planning, you can create a wonderfully enriching viewing experience for your students.

In my opinion, vodcasting offers a revolutionary opportunity to shift the notion of "lecture" into something much more interesting and effective. To do so, it must be done thoughtfully and not just as a recording of the traditional chalk talk type experience.
