Formative Feedback Loops

Giving quality feedback is part of the equation when student learn. Formative assessments can be used to get an idea of where students understandings are and where they need to go. If deficiencies exist, reteaching and studying can take place and a reassessment is given to give students another chance to demonstrate mastery on that concept or skill.

Using Feedback Loops

Integrating these loops into a classroom experience is essential, in my opinion, because when you put the emphasis on learning rather than grades students see  it as a work in progress rather than something that is final and never revisited.

Innovative Vs. Traditional

In the "old school" approach, learning is captured into a prescribed time period often punctuated by summative assessments. The skills and ideas in those assessments are rarely revisited and it is never rewarded if the student improves their level of skill. In the formative feedback loop, learning is emphasized rather than end results. This fosters an environment where growth is valued and life long learning skills are developed.
