Using Video For Simulations

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, well how many words is a video worth? This was the question I was pondering this morning as I completed a short video on how to find the North Star, Polaris for my students. In my original classroom I would bring up stellarium on the smart board in Septmber and show my students myself  how to find the North Star and some other details about this topic. I've subsequently come to realize that for many of my students that was the only time they saw, thought, or interacted with this topic all year. This was not because they were not interested, it was because it was not as accessible as it could be if I put me talking about it on the net. Now they can watch essentially the same explanation as a video at any point in the year- even bring a laptop outside and have me explain while they are looking outside!
