Creating A Growth Mindset

Focusing on the learning process takes thought into what factors encourage students to embrace growth which emphasizes process over results. There are multiple entry points into the discussion which together dramatically improve learning outcomes. Relationships, motivation and opportunity to improve all play important roles. In our classroom, we've been fortunate to successfully incorporate meaningful growth into our daily routines. Using enlightened grading is essential to have student buy in and provide the framework for enduring understanding to develop.

Building Relationships

We all know that students need to feel physically safe in our classrooms, but many don't feel mentally safe. Taking risks and showing vulnerability is scary and no one wants to look stupid in front of others. Being aware of interacting thoughtfully with our students plays a pivotal role in whether they want to open up and truly learn. Collaboration and discussion are central to the process where each student feels comfortable opening up to share their thoughts, observations and questions. When we allow each other to confer with one another and bounce ideas back and forth to build consensus, the spotlight effect disappears. Once every voice is heard and listened to students are more at ease showing growth.

Motivation

This is a tough one because many teachers (and students) incorrectly feel that grades are motivators to learning. This assumption is flawed because it is actually fear that is the driver within this paradigm. The end result is compliance not growth. When we utilize formative assessment regularly combined with quality, timely feedback students know what direction to take for further growth rather than ending the process with a number grade. By modeling growth ourselves as "lead learners" students see that learning is interesting and fulfilling- in other words worth doing!

Opportunity

Largely unexplored, in my opinion, is continuing the learning outside of class. I strive to provide a learning environment that is interesting enough to students that they want to continue exploring on their own. Creating engaging activities where students create their own content and each come up with unique artifacts that connect with their interests is essential. Placing these activities within the context of modern web based tools and mobile technology ensure that students can showcase both their learning and growth 24/7.

Learning And Growth

Creating a growth mindset means moving away from traditional one shot grades. Reassessment is key as well as removing behavioral grades. Do you have strategies that you have employed in creating a culture of growth in your classroom or school? Since this is so important, I'd like to continue the conversation and hear what you've done to emphasize growth rather than grades.
